Twice a month, other people, send nowhere: Cameraphone usage survey

K-Tai Watch reports on a survey into Japanese cameraphone usage trends by Info-Plant that on the face of it appears to confirm what we knew and feared, and to bode ill for the future of moblogs (and carriers' data revenues): Most people use their phone's camera two or three times a month, to take pictures of their family or friends, which they either view on the same phone or use as standby screens. Extracts from the survey quoted by K-Tai Watch include:

Usage frequency:

  • 2-3 days per month: 33.5%
  • 1-2 days per month: 30.4%
  • 3-4 days per week: 12.1%
  • 5 days or more per week: 5.4%

    Subjects photographed:

  • Immediate family or relatives: 43.8%
  • Friends/acquaintances: 43.8%
  • Landscapes/scenes: 33.9%
  • Pets: 31.6%

    Usage:

  • Look at on phone used to shoot photo: 70.8%
  • Send to another person's phone: 66.6%
  • Use as own standby screen: 66.5%
  • Upload to website: 2.3%

The survey (on an i-mode publicity site) had 23,060 respondents, of whom 19,864 used cameraphones.

We wonder how much the stats really tell us about moblogging, incidentally; our impression here is that most mobloggers are using cellphones as tools to post to the "real web" (rather than cellphone websites), and that they may not be as interested in the mobile web as more recreational users, who quite often have a cellphone as their only internet connection--so the latter group may not be a very representative sample.
