Matsushita Electric Industrial is to begin mass production of a new image sensor for cellphone cameras this month. The vMAICOVICON (New Matsushita Advanced Image Converter for Vision Construction) comes in 1.3- and 2.0-megapixel versions; pixel size is 2.8 micrometres, and the sensor will apparently give detailed resolution even at light levels below 5 lux. Power consumption is about a fifth of a CCD with the equivalent number of pixels (2.9V/25mW for the 1.3 megapixel version, 2.9V/45mW for the 2.0).
