10GB on a postage stamp for $1?: NTT's new memory
NTT has developed a storage technology that allows 1GB of data (in the prototype) to be stored on a layered clear plastic chip that's the size of a postage stamp and costs a few hundred yen. It envisages the Info-MICA (Information-Multilayered Imprinted CArd) being used to store content such as music given its low cost and resilience to forgery. The plan is for mass production versions to cost perhaps Y100-Y200 per card and store 10GB and upwards. They can be read with a standard semiconductor laser in a palm-sized drive; photos of the prototype drive are featured in the ITmedia article below.
