Sony announces mini TV tuner chip

Via Gizmodo, Yahoo! News reports that Sony has a micro-sized digital TV tuner chip lined up for shipping in December this year.

The tuner module, which is smaller than a postage stamp, can be used in mobile applications such as cell phones or personal digital assistants (PDAs).

Sony, the world's largest consumer electronics manufacturer, says the module is the smallest of its kind and has the lowest power consumption.

The one thing that puzzles me about this is that the standards and codecs etc. for digital broadcasting to mobile devices are supposedly still way up in the air...or does Sony know something we don't?
