Fitbit Versa 3 Overview

Fitbit released the Versa 3 in September 2020. It followed the Versa and Versa 2, released in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Fitbit promoted the Versa 3 as a smartwatch with mass appeal. And it came with several strong improvements on the previous design seen in the Fitbit Versa 2 review.

Now let's look at the Fitbit Versa 3 in greater detail.

Design and Finish

The Fitbit app is a sleek, matte aluminium casing that comes in three colour combinations. Choose from a black band with a black watch, a midnight blue band with a soft gold watch or a pink clay band with a soft gold watch.

Each Fitbit Versa 3 comes with two bands in the standard sizes. The smaller band measures 13.9-18cm in circumference. The larger measures 18-22.1cm in circumference.

Like its predecessors, the Versa 3 has a button on its left side in addition to its AMOLED touchscreen. It has sensors that monitor infrared, ambient light, heart rate and device temperature.

Its microphone, speakers and GPS are all built-in. That goes for its accelerometer, altimeter and vibration motor, too.

Screen Size

The square, 4x4cm screen of the Fitbit Versa 3 mirrors the design of previous Versas and the Fitbit Sense. It's a departure from the classic, rectangular shapes of the Fitbit Charge 4, Alta HR, and Inspire lineups.

A larger surface area on the screen makes it easier to navigate through the Fitbit. The Versa 3 also has a full-colour display. You can set this to be always on or to wake up when you rotate your wrist.

336x336 pixels is an upgrade from the Versa 2's 300x300 display. This means you're going to get a clearer, crisper picture on the Versa 3.

Another perk of that spacious AMOLED display? You have hundreds of clock faces to choose from. Pick one of Fitbit's standard designs or make one yourself!

You can find Versa 3 clock faces through the Fitbit App on your phone or in an app on your device.

Connectivity Features

Fitbit uses its own operating system, Fitbit OS, on its devices. The Fitbit Versa 3 has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 capabilities. This is another improvement over the Versa 2's Bluetooth 4.0.

You'll need both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to sync your device to the Fitbit App on your phone. But you can use the Fitbit Versa 3 with your Android or iOS device. The latest version of the Fitbit App requires iOS 12.2 or higher and Android 7.0 or higher.

Just install the app on your phone and follow the prompts when you're ready to set up your device. You can opt for automatic syncing throughout the day. Or, manually sync your data whenever you choose.

You can also access certain apps on your phone through your Versa 3. But more on that in the features section below.

Battery Life

The Versa 3 battery lasts nearly a full week. This beats out the Versa 2 by a full 1-2 days.

Certain features like always-on displays or heavy GPS or app use will drain the battery faster. But standard use should have you seeing around six days on a single charge.

And speaking of charging, the Fitbit's lithium-polymer battery charges in about 40 minutes. It does have fast-charging capabilities, too. You can get one day of battery life after about 12 minutes of charging.

Fitbit recommends charging your device every 3-4 days. That will keep you from losing data due to an empty battery.

Features and Functions

Now that we know a bit more about the device, what can it do? These are the most exciting features and functions of the Fitbit Versa 3.

1. Exercise Tracking

What would a fitness tracker be if it didn't track exercise? The Fitbit Versa 3 goes well beyond Fitbit's original purpose as premium step trackers.

In addition to tracking your steps, the Versa 3 has over 20 different exercise modes to choose from. If you're starting a yoga class, select "yoga" on your device. Here are some of the others:

  • walking
  • running
  • swimming
  • treadmill
  • elliptical
  • spinning
  • biking
  • tennis
  • golf
  • boot camp workout
  • interval workout
  • standard workout
  • weights
  • pilates
  • kickboxing
  • martial arts
  • stair climbing
  • circuit training

You can even set goals for time, distance, calories and active zone minutes before you start each exercise. If you forget to track a workout, don't worry. Fitbit's SmartTrack feature can recognize and record your workouts after a set time.

A big improvement in how the Versa 3 tracks exercise is the new built-in GPS feature. Previous models, like the Versa 2, had to connect to the GPS on your phone to track your distance and location. Now, the Versa 3 does it for you.

The Versa 3 monitors your active zones, tallying how many minutes you spend at your target heart rate. It can also be used in the pool or open water, tracking laps and maintaining functionality up to 50m underwater.

2. Heart Rate and Oxygen Saturation

The Versa 3 continues Fitbit's legacy of providing 24/7 heart rate tracking with their PurePulse 2.0 technology. Now, they've added an SpO2 tracker. This tracks the amount of oxygen saturation in your blood, alerting you to changes between 80-100%.

3. Cardio Fitness Levels

Because it tracks heart rate and active zones, the Versa 3 offers a cardio fitness assessment in the app. You can see how your fitness level stacks up compared to other men or women your age.

Use this feature as added motivation to get in shape. Or, track your progress by seeing how your fitness level improves over time.

4. Skin Temperature and Heart Variability

Each night, the Versa 3 can track variations in your skin temperature. It will alert you to changes from your baseline average.

Similarly, the Versa 3 will keep tabs on variations in the time between each of your heartbeats. Abnormalities may indicate stress, illness or exhaustion. Once you've established enough data to produce an average, Fitbit will alert you to any changes from your norm.

5. Guided Breathing

Guided breathing has become a more popular feature in the latest Fitbits. You can select a two-minute or five-minute session that will guide you in slow, deep breathing techniques. It's great for those moments when you get overwhelmed or right before you go to bed.

The Versa 3 also tracks your breathing rate during sleep. See if you experience any deviations in breathing patterns as you sleep. They could be a sign of sleep apnea or the reason why you rarely wake up feeling rested.

6. Sleep Monitoring

The Versa 3 tracks your light, deep and REM sleep stages. Its Sleep Score analysis can help you understand your quality of sleep and know how to improve it.

Tired of notifications waking you up in the middle of the night? Just enable the Versa 3's sleep mode. It will mute all your notifications until morning.

If you need help waking up, use the Versa 3's Smart Wake feature. It will gently buzz on your wrist during a light sleep stage, easing you peacefully into your day.

Additionally, you can set alarms on your Fitbit Versa 3 to go off at any time, including wake-up alarms.

7. Menstrual Tracking

For the ladies, Fitbit Versa 3 can be used in tandem with the Fitbit App to track your menstrual cycle. Log the start and end dates of your period. Track your symptoms, ovulation and PMS.

Over time, you'll be able to chart patterns in your cycle. Your device will help you predict when the next one will start, giving you more control over your period.

8. Reminders, Messages and Calls

Always forget to leave your desk for your steps? Fitbit Versa 3 can send you hourly reminders to get up and move. It can also remind you to get some shut-eye.

Personalize your reminders to fit your daily schedule. When it's time for a reminder, your Versa 3 will buzz and display a cheeky message and an animated graphic.

You can also use the Versa 3 to track your calls, messages and notifications. When your phone is out of reach, your Fitbit will alert you to incoming calls, texts and updates from your apps.

You can respond to calls and messages with both quick replies and voice replies. Take calls over Bluetooth, send a call to voicemail or adjust the volume right from your wrist.

Compatible Apps

The Versa 3 is compatible with a ton of external apps that you can link from your phone. Use Fitbit Pay, control your Spotify playlist and even use your Fitbit to find your phone.

This Fitbit can also connect to Alexa, allowing you to use its voice assistant feature. If you don't want to get notifications on your wrist at work, just enable the Do Not Disturb Mode.

Price Range

In Australia, the Fitbit Versa 3 is on the market for $399. This places it between the Fitbit Versa 2 and the Fitbit Sense in terms of affordability. On the lower end of the spectrum, you'll find the Fitbit Versa and the Versa Lite Fitbit.

Fitbit Accessories

One of the best things about owning a Fitbit is customizing its look! There are a ton of available bands to choose from.

Dress your Versa 3 up with a silver, gold or leather band. Or pump up your next workout with a colourful elastomer band. You can even get on-screen protectors and over-screen protectors for your Versa 3.
