New Nintendo handheld to display at E3

Nintendo has announced a new portable game machine, provisionally called the Nintendo DS, which is to be exhibited at the forthcoming Electronics Entertainment Expo in playable form (that's in May, so a while off yet). No pictures available, but the novelty comes from its two 3-inch TFT screens, laid out one above the other, which can be used as either one big display, or separated to, for example, show an overview of the field of play on one screen and a close-up of one character on the other in an RPG.

It's powered by an ARM9 main processor (big brother to the ARM7 in the GameBoy Advance) and ARM7 sub-processor, and games will come on some kind of 1 gigabit flash memory card.

Release date will apparently be toward the end of 2004 in Japan.
