New dual-band phone from Sharp

v801sh.jpg
New 3G W-CDMA/triband GSM Vodafone handset for Japan/worldwide use. The Sharp V801SH includes a 1-megapixel camera, voice recorder/multimedia player, and e-book/dictionary reader, and will currently work in 84 countries for voice, with web browsing and multimedia email through the Vodafone Live! service available in 29 of those.

We were chatting to a Nokia engineer the other night who was muttering about having a dual GSM/W-CDMA handset but not being able to text people in Japan (though he could text to the UK); we wonder if the same limitation applies the other way round too. Japanese phones do have SMS, but you can only send to people on the same carrier's network here (we believe); the mainstream in Japan from early on has been push email using the "user@carrier.ne.jp" address every user has, which can be sent cross-carrier (and also opens up a whole world of spam possibilities).
