Intelligent screwdriver

superdrill.jpg
Matsushita Electric Works has launched what they call the world's first intelligent screwdriver. Looking like something that would crop up in Ultraman or Power Rangers, it allows you to record macros--slow start, fast midsection, slow again at the end, for example--and replay them with a single button-push. Record an expert's macro and even the novice screwer will see a dramatic improvement, so they claim. It also has a learning function that allows it to gravitate to the speed range you're using most often.

Costs a whopping Y68,500. Out February 1 in Japan.

No NYC carpenter, tinknocker, electrician, hvac mechanic that I know would even figure out how to program it. But the main thing is that there are so many factors when out on the job sites that a slip at the beginning could prematurely stop the rotation because the macos is finished. Plus, they are used to rapid start/stopping to finish the drilling/screwing etc. as to not damage the sheetrock, ductwork, door frame etc...

Not that no one will use it, but I think thiis is mroe of a home consumer luxury item rather than a union workers tool.

My Sears el-cheapo 14V screwdriver is a fair bit damn more intelligent than that one, I'd bet...

... It's powered by my finger, which has a pretty straight pipe to my brain.

Beat that, Matsushita.

I challenge the intelligent screwdriver to a spelling bee. Anyplace, anytime mr. screwdriver. You and me.

Way to go Panasonic! They'll sell more to home users than union dudes and making money's where its at. I bet the colors will freak out the contractors.

What we really need is an intelligent hammer, maybe laser guided to hit the nail every time instead of my thumb. I rarely hurt myself with a screwdriver.

Yeah that laser guided hammer sound good, or a set of wrenches with global positioning chips so I can find them when I need them, or a set pliers with pressure sensors so I know how hard to use them, or better yet a smart bucket that tell me the correct amount of water to use when I clean something.
Yeah thats what we need more crap that breaks the minute you grab it, and has an instruction manual bigger than my phonebook.
