Nokia's Valentine Day gift set for Japan
Nokia has the ultimate gadget freak Valentine gift--a cellphone packaged with some chocolates, one of them shaped like a cellphone. Those wacky Nokia folks.
You can choose from either the GSM-only 6610 or the dual GSM/W-CDMA 6650. Not cheap at Y39,800 and Y59,800 respectively.

[Update] We should note that in Japan Valentine's Day is when girls give chocolates to boys; a month later, on White Day, the boys reciprocate (if they feel like it).

GSM/CDMA? When are we going to see this tech in the US?
Posted by: gumptu on January 21, 2004 03:01 AMI find it inexpliccable that Nokia would be selling GSM only phones in Japan- perhaps the only country in the world without any GSM network whatsoever. Frankly, the standard Nokia phones seem about two years behind the phones you get for free with most carriers in Japan anyway.
Posted by: Roy on January 21, 2004 12:13 PMNokia sells a few GSM-only models in Japan for use overseas. They're targeting Japanese business travellers who are unfamiliar with how overseas cellphone systems work and want Japanese-speaking support, I suspect.
Posted by: aragoto on January 21, 2004 02:14 PMThe 6650 works in Japan on the Vodafone KK (formerly known as J-Phone) WCDMA network (and on GSM networks elsewhere),
Posted by: keitai on January 21, 2004 11:42 PMOne thing I can tell you is, Nokia does the similar thing to this in Korea - selling their GSM-phones where "NO GSM" networks are available. It's just kinda brand marketing. That's it.
Posted by: jef on January 22, 2004 06:06 PMfunny, I have already seen this technology in the U.S. Both gsm and cdma phones are sold here. Dual and tri band phones both are sold here as well. Where have you been?
Posted by: slayar on January 23, 2004 02:58 AMYeah, I live in the land of Nokia, Finland ^__^ (Why doesn't anyone know that nokia is a finnish company?) Anyhoo my friend who works for Nokia's product development tested the first tri-band phone ages ago, i think it was about 3 years ago. The name Nokia comes from the city of Nokia here in Finland, they started off by making car tires and ruber boots ^__^
