KDDI radio cellphone coming within the year
Not to be outdone by all this talk of TV tuners in phones, KDDI has announced (Keitai Watch article in Japanese) that it will have a cellphone with an FM radio tuner out within the year. The tuner will be controlled by a BREW application that will also give users one-click access to playlists and artist information on the radio station's website, through an alliance with the national association of FM broadcasters (formed for the purpose of this service, no less). It will also be possible to download a segment of whatever song one is listening to in chaku-uta (song ringtone) form, and to purchase CDs and concert tickets.
Looks like the ideas for cellphone TV and radio are going to be somewhat similar; interesting to see that KDDI is aiming squarely for music, probably due to the roaring success of the chaku-uta service.
