Dual 3G/WLAN phones coming in FY04
Reuters wire is reporting that DoCoMo has developed a dual wireless LAN/3G handset prototype, to go on sale in fiscal 2004 (starting next April). The target will be corporate users, who would get VoIP over WLAN in the office and use the 3G network outside. Whether the phones could be used with WLAN hotspots outside the office is unclear, though DoCoMo does have a network of these.
[UPDATE] We received a link (thanks!) to this story about China Telecom planning to rollout a service that switches seamlessly between WiFi and cellphones. This sounds like a rather different animal to what DoCoMo's planning, however.
